Saint-Aignan-sur-Cher is a small French commune located in the Loir-et-Cher department of the Centre-Val de Loire region. Its rich history dates back to ancient times, thanks to its strategic geographical position and cultural heritage.

Ancient and medieval history

  • Ancient times: The Saint-Aignan region was already inhabited in Gallo-Roman times. Archaeological remains, such as pottery and tools, bear witness to this early occupation.

  • Middle Ages: The town takes its name from Saint Aignan, bishop of Orléans in the 5th century, who is said to have saved the town from the Huns in 451. The town's strategic position on the Cher river facilitated trade and commerce.

  • Château de Saint-Aignan: Originally built in the 9th century, the château has been rebuilt and modified several times over the centuries. It played an important role in the defense of the region during periods of conflict.

Renaissance and Modern period

  • Église Collégiale Saint-Aignan: One of the town's most outstanding monuments, this church boasts impressive Gothic architecture and houses numerous works of art.

Recent periods

French Revolution: Like many French towns, Saint-Aignan was affected by the Revolution. Church and nobility property is confiscated, and many buildings are damaged.

19th century: The town becomes industrialized, and new infrastructures such as schools and roads are built, boosting its economic and demographic development.

20th century: Saint-Aignan escapes the relative destruction of the two world wars. Tourism begins to take off, thanks in particular to its proximity to the Beauval ZooParc, opened in 1980.
